040979 -            this past year, I researched industry trends, and found
040980 -            that large scale procurement limits use of computers on the
040981 -            job primarily to wordprocessing, spreadsheets, email,
040982 -            Powerpoint... Authorities note that command and control
040983 -            management requires uniformity that restrains innovation
040984 -            and creativity by employees to use computers productively.
040985 -            Bill Gates announced on November 8, 2002 that Microsoft is
040986 -            working to make computers more productive by integrating
040987 -            commands to find information when needed. ref SDS 6 EF5I
040988 -            This requires a common storage strategy (CSS) for
040989 -            organizational memory.  The need to find critical details
040990 -            in time to be effective occurs often in law practice, and I
040991 -            am pleased to have been part of the solution.  Last year
040992 -            when Mr.  Poole could no longer come into the office, I was
040993 -            approached by a group of attorneys to find work product,
040994 -            which Mr.  Poole had prepared on a prior transaction, and
040995 -            which was needed as a template to prepare a proposal by the
040996 -            New York office for new business. They were reluctant to
040997 -            burden Mr.  Poole at home, but asked me because nobody else
040998 -            could find the information.  Fortunately, I found it in
040999 -            time to meet New York's deadline.  Since returning from
041000 -            sick leave in October, I have been pleased to see the firm
041001 -            begin to implement recommendations on adopting a virtual
041002 -            office metaphor.  This saves money by reducing time
041003 -            shuffling paper at the copy machine, the fax machine,
041004 -            mailing, and hunting through endless piles of paper to find
041005 -            critical details.  We have barely scratched the surface on
041006 -            this emerging opportunity to use technology productively.
