- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 3 0000, ref SDS 2 0000.
-
- Submitted email linked to this record notifying Gary about new problem
- found today working with the record on 040610, where the justify op
- was crashing after very few cycles (uses), which impedes editing.
- ..
- One of these many crashes was the occassion when the record on 040610,
- which is about 70K, increased to 700MB. Gary provided assistance to
- recover.
-
- [On 040707 obtained hex editor XVI32 that may be helpful on
- similar problems in the future. ref SDS 4 0001
- ..
- The cause of the problem is traced to work on 040528 when the recl
- command was set to 3000, ref SDS 2 QM5I, in order to support Gary's
- work that sometimes encounters email and other wordprocessing files
- with long lines, and which Gary wants to analyse in SDS records.
- ref SDS 2 PP6Y As shown in that record, recl was later changed to
- 2000 for the general condition, and set to 500 for the Subject Index
- in order to scroll large sorted indexes. ref SDS 2 686L
- ..
- Today, experience with justify failing led to abandoning the prior
- design of having a default recl 2000, and instead this is changed to
- 400. The code for analysing documents, which is the primary objective
- Gary initially raised, is set to support recl 2000, but only
- temporarily for the current session, as explained further in the same
- record. ref SDS 2 OC6G
- ..
- The change in the code likely requires adjustment to work practice,
- and is listed in the record on 040528. ref SDS 2 NF4K
- ..
- Morris has scheduled time on 040724 to work on this problem, reported
- on 031114, ref SDS 1 0001, so maybe a better solution will emerge that
- does not require user attention to remember to perform the new steps.
- ..
- Sent copy to Morris confirming plans to meet on 040724.
-
- [On 040929 Morris fixed problem with join that improves memory
- management. ref SDS 5 0001
- ..
- Sent copy to Wayne so he is alerted to the issue.

- 2. This is a test trying to see what happens when the user creates a letter that has very long lines that do not wrap, but instead goes on and on for 500 to 2000 columns, because nobody pressed the Enter key to start a new paragraph and so the lines are very very long and sometimes too long. We are testing to see if the system that sets a temporary recl of 2000 characters will support reading in a letter with more than the default record length of 400, but not sure how long this has to be in o
- are testing to see if the system that sets a temporary recl of
- 2000 characters will support reading in a letter with more than
- the default record length of 400, but not sure how long this
- has to be in order to have 2000 characters, or at least more
- than 400. I think that limit is exceeded by this message now,
- but will go just a little further to make sure we get a valid
- test.
