Subject:   Goals for KM and Alignment with SDS

Dear Gary,

Thanks again for your letter on January 8, 2002 to Morris that explores important issues on collaborating to update SDS, and moving toward Knowledge Management.

Realizing you have limited time, there are three action items that might justify your consideration in going forward...

  1. Explain your vision and goals for KM, how you feel SDS fits as the core/foundation to advance beyond information technology, or, however, else you would like to present your sense of what needs to be produced for improving productivity, perhaps drawing on the statement by Intel engineers on April 18, 1991.

  2. Explain what you would like to contribute within available time, the role you want, and the kind of team you feel is needed to implement the goals, and whether you know of others who may share your vision, and are willing and able to contribute.

  3. Linking communications using procedures set out on January 6, 2002 and for reasons in the record on January 8.

I realize this may be a sore subject, but seems like we need to try to make progress on this, as in contacting Morris.

Getting SDS into your hands will of course make this easier.

If you feel SDS is a fruitful development path, then we need to focus on whether to initially upgrade or launch a new program, as you discussed on January 8.

All of us are in a box of IT that has grown powerful over 2,000 years while the culture has matured in deploying alphabet technology. It is necessarily a struggle to pass through a window into the more powerful box of Knowledge Management We are pioneers, like Daniel Boone who blazed a trail through the mountains into the territory of Kentucky, probably by accident. In the beginning it is a struggle to build a road that is adequate for others to reach the new frontier, and then to attract followers. But, if history is any guide, the opportunity is endless for advancing from information to a culture of knowledge. While often only a few can blaze a trail, it takes a team to do the rest, and, especially in the beginning, this requires good faith collaboration. We are now working to forge that faith.

Again, thanks very much for all the time you have devoted to thinking about SDS, and for your generous and cogent comments.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY
