Dear Jerry,
Responding to your letter today asking about SDS and POIMS, here is a recent letter that sets out some steps I think are needed for implementation, and the management science of Communication Metrics.
A basic first step is to get people like you, Jack Park, to whom the letter is written, and others talking to each other and linking that communication back to precepts in POIMS, so there is a foundation on which to build. We have to expand the circle of people who share your vision by engaging them in a discussion about advantages of adding "intelligence" to daily work. Seems simple, but most people have difficulty with this idea. We have to work at it, so if you suggest to your boss that you want to use KM, there is some understanding of how this saves time and money. (Incidentally, I used your letter today in setting up a meeting at Stanford next week on this general issue).
There are actually a growing number of people like you who have bumped into SDS on the Internet and recognized an opportunity to improve the work.
So, one scenario is to communicate among this group to expand shared meaning about Com Metrics as explained in POIMS and shown in SDS records on the web.
The next step is to get other people using SDS to learn about the substance of KM in daily work, rather than merely a lot of talk and email. The record on December 19, 2000 explains what is entailed using SDS.
Hope this isn't more than you bargained for. The good news is you can start doing KM immediately, as you have seen on the web.
