Dear Cliff,
This follows up the letter to you on August 1, setting out ideas for moving KM forward.
On August 15 meetings were suspended at SRI on Doug Engelbart's DKR program. Over the following weeks, Doug met individually with various contributors to finalize the architecture. On August 24 there was a report that SRI is proposing the Rod Welch system. I have not heard from Doug, however, on August 29, Pat Lincoln, who heads up SRI's Computer Science department, advised that Doug has indicated SRI can create a duplicate of SDS in about a year.
In any case, SRI's research over the past 9 months seems to show that SDS provides a powerful core capability for Knowledge Management. One might say...
SDS saves time and money doing knowledge work of any kind, and so should be ideal for LANL. It offers development path for using and extending daily "intelligence," because the work product is ascii files that have a rich array of natural hooks that can be easily processed by other tools and system, noted by Pat Lincoln on August 29.
In our meeting on July 23, you planned to think about how SDS can be applied at LANL.
Can we follow up this to begin moving forward?
Sincerely,
THE WELCH COMPANY
Rod Welch
