Subject:   Meetings SRI and LANL Week of July 24

Dear Morris,

This week got some interest in SDS, possibly doing a project or two.

Of course nothing may result, execpt pretty sure IBM wants me to do a presentation at the Almaden Research Center on KM.

On Tuesday, talked to Pat Lincoln, Director of Computer Science at SRI. Pat expressed what seemed like strong interest in doing a direct project to use SDS for the core of a KM capability. This would be apart from Doug's DKR project.

Pat is traveling this week with Doug on fund raising in Washington; but, we set a meeting for July 25 at 0930 at SRI. If possible, it would be great if you could attend the meeting with Pat on July 25. I realize this is probably not possible, but will keep my fingers crossed. I think there is some flexibiliy on adjusting dates and times to accomodate your schedule. Just let me know.

Your role would be a business consultant/advisor. You would also be able to speak professionally about computer science. I think Pat realizes that SDS is an effective solution, so I am not concerned about that issue, but launching a project is aided by moxy and language that gives people a comfort zone, and you can deliver that.

So, do you want to support this meeting, and can you do it? Do we need to try for adjusting the schedule? My letter to Pat yesterday, requests confirmation of date and time.

Second...

This morning, got a call from Cliff Joslyn, who is the contact at Los Alamos National Lab (LANL). He runs their KM program reviewed initially on March 14, 2000. You may recall, we were planning to meet with Cliff at the end of May, but got delayed by the firestorms, then they have been plagued by security issues. I wrote to Cliff near the ned of June, and didn't hear anything; so, the call today was a suprise.

We talked for several hours. Cliff expressed interest in purchasing SDS for use by the lab. Cliff will be in the Bay Area from July 21 through July 27. On the 27th he will make a presentation to Doug's team at SRI. Cliff has two days of meetings in Berkeley, and two days at Xerox. The rest of the time is available for reviewing SDS and meetig with you at Intel, if your schedule permits.

Tentatively, we will spend one day demonstrating SDS. We could do that half-a-day, then drive down and meet with you, or split the thing up in two days of stuff to accomodate your schedule. Cliff has some interesting AI type solutions he wants to talk about for processing the SDS record, possibly like Paul Fernhout discussed the other day.

Can you provide an indication of whether you will be in town the week of July 24, and open to meeting with Cliff. We might even be able to double up and do both SRI and Cliff the same day, if you can meet with SRI on July 25.

It just occurred to me that -- I am hoping Cliff does not want me to "entertain" while he is visiting. I am not into entertainment. He is going to be in town over the weekend. Should I suggest we visit together sometime on the weekend?

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY
