Doug Engelbart's Colloquium at Stanford
The Unfinished Revolution

Subject:   Alliance for the Revolution

Dear Eric,

This is a stab at fostering alliance for moving forward on Doug's revolution.

Your analysis on January 18 provides an initial framework for identifying concrete goals, strategy and tasks. We might be a bit early, since Doug will want to provide guidance, probably after the weekly sessions are concluded. In the meantime, your outline and consequent dialog energize Doug's vision.

If you and others get to this letter, you may be annoyed and retreat, or intrigued and press on to review an example of a knowledge repository that now contains your letter and a few others, integrated within a larger context. You should find some evident alignment with your outline, and possibly significant divergence. In any case it is a functioning system for narrative information, which is needed in some form for Doug's revolution.

Since you have taken the lead in outlining a development program, hopefully you can synthesize ideas and concerns that are rolling in, toward formalizing requirements, or at least guiding the discussion with questions and comments about common views and conflicts, so that we are not going in 20 different directions. Four or five different directions should be enough to maintain healthy debate through the Colloquium.

Thanks for a great effort planning the "revolution."

Sincerely,

Rod
