W98 Crashing when Downloading from Internet

1008 - ..
1009 - Summary/Objective
1010 -
101001 - Follow up ref SDS 11 0000, ref SDS 10 0000.
101002 -
101003 - Seem to be a lot of problems with Kath's computer. The system has the
101004 - capacity to run W98, but is crashing during boot up. Installed
101005 - network card from CPU8 to transfer stuff from CPU11 for configuring
101006 - Kath's computer. Had to remove it. Got errors trying to use drives g
101007 - and h. For some reason the new hard drive is formatted for FAT16,
101008 - instead of FAT32. Tried to convert the drives to save space and
101009 - hopefully solve some of the problems, but system kept crashing during
101010 - the operation.
101011 -
101012 - [On 990807 formatted drives and reinstalled operating system,
101013 - contined problems. ref SDS 12 0001]
101014 -
101015 - [On 990808 got stable installation. ref SDS 13 9666]
101016 -
101017 - [On 990810 system failed again. ref SDS 14 0741]
101018 -
101019 - [On 990811 system setup and working properly. ref SDS 15 0001]
101020 -
101021 -
1011 -
1012 - Progress
1013 -
101301 - Removed the cover.
101302 -
101303 - There is no video card, it seems to be part of the motherboard.
101304 -
101305 - There is a modem.
101306 -
101307 - I moved it over one slot to make room for a network card which I took
101308 - from CPU8.
101309 -
101310 - This will facilitate transfering files.
101311 -
101312 - Use instructions on 990114 to configure. ref SDS 2 6149
101313 -
101314 -
101315 - All of the ribbon connectors seem to be fully seated.
101316 -
101317 - Boot up shows system has 8 MB of video RAM, which is the same as
101318 - CPU11, per record on 981112. ref SDS 1 2537
101319 -
101320 - It has 64 MB of RAM.
101321 -
101322 - It has an AMD 333 Mhz processor.
101323 -
101324 - The system had to restart to configure the network card.
101325 -
101326 - It seems to get Windows files it needs from the hard drive, so
101327 - maybe the installation files are on the hard drive.
101328 -
101329 - I installed netbui and File sharing protocols for the network.
101330 -
101331 - After the restart we are not getting the network screen for
101332 - logon.
101333 - ..
101334 - On each pass, it failed to restart itself. It hangs up on the
101335 - Windows logon screen.
101336 -
101337 - After about 10 minutes or so, I pressed the restart button.
101338 -
101339 - On this restart, it boots into safe mode.
101340 -
101341 - In safe mode, restart is selected and the system started
101342 - successfully.
101343 - ..
101344 - About the 4th pass on this cycle, a system crash occurred again
101345 - on start up with following error...
101346 -
101347 - fatal exception 0E at 0028:C00143F7
101348 -
101349 - Press Enter to restart the system.
101350 -
101351 - On this occassion, I pressed Enter and the system complete a
101352 - successful boot up.
101353 -
101354 - Tried a full Shut Down
101355 -
101356 - Got a message...
101357 -
101358 - System is dangerously low on resources
101359 -
101360 - Press yes to shut down "Quick"
101361 -
101362 - Did this.
101363 -
101364 - System hung again and got following message...
101365 -
101366 - fatal exception 0D at 1777:00003F2D
101367 -
101368 - Was able to rebooot by pressing Ctrl Alt Del
101369 -
101370 - System booted successfully.
101371 -
101372 - Tried another shut down.
101373 -
101374 - This time it shut down correctly.
101375 - ..
101376 - Turned it back on.
101377 -
101378 - During start up, after the Windows logo, got following message...
101379 -
101380 - While initializing device CONFIGMG
101381 -
101382 - Windows protection error: you need to restart your computer
101383 -
101384 - Pressed re-start button.
101385 -
101386 - System booted into Safe Mode.
101387 - ..
101388 - Booted system and it came up successfully.
101389 -
101390 - Investigated drive properties and found that all of them are
101391 - configured for FAT16, instead of FAT32, which is a major advantage of
101392 - using W98.
101393 -
101394 - Tried system shut down again.
101395 -
101396 - Pressed power on button.
101397 -
101398 - Booted into Safe Mode.
101399 -
101400 - Used "re-start" to boot back into normal mode.
101401 -
101402 - System shut itself off again during re-start from Safe Mode.
101403 -
101404 - Tried defragmenting the drives in Safe Mode.
101405 -
101406 - Didn't work. System will not boot into normal mode.
101407 -
101408 - Checked Drive Diagnostics...
101409 -
101410 - C: drive has over 1 GB of stuff, and I: drive has operating
101411 - system, so it is difficult to understand what is on the computer.
101412 -
101413 - C: drive is configures as FAT16, rather than FAT32.
101414 -
101415 -
101416 - Will now remove the Network card.
101417 -
101418 - Booted system, and it shut itself down during the boot sequence.
101419 -
101420 - Turned it back on and it booted into Safe mode.
101421 -
101422 - Ran "re-start" and this time the thing booted up normally.
101423 -
101424 - So, the network card was part of the cause of the problem.
101425 -
101426 - Will try shut down.
101427 -
101428 - Turned it back on, and the thing shut itself down again during boot
101429 - up.
101430 -
101431 - Turned it back on.
101432 -
101433 - It booted up into Safe mode.
101434 -
101435 - Shut it down.
101436 -
101437 - Turned it on and it booted up correctly.
101438 -
101439 - Shut it down.
101440 -
101441 - Turned it back on, and the thing shut itself down again during boot
101442 - up.
101443 -
101444 - It booted up into Safe mode.
101445 -
101446 - Ran "re-start" and this time the thing booted up normally.
101447 - ..
101448 - Formatted drives...
101449 -
101450 - d
101451 - e
101452 - f
101453 - g failed
101454 - h failed
101455 -
101456 - Error message formatting g: and h: drives.
101457 -
101458 - Invalid media or track 0 bad disk unusable.
101459 -
101460 - This is likely why the thing will not boot up.
101461 -
101462 - Tried to fix the drives with scandisk.
101463 -
101464 - Scandisk reported no errors on g or h.
101465 -
101466 - So, this is a mystery. We cannot format the drives and there are no
101467 - errors on the drive.
101468 -
101469 - Also, why are none of the drives configured for FAT32? ref SDS 0 4988

101476 -
101477 - Tried to install W98 again.

101489 -

101491 -
101492 - Turned computer on
101493 -
101494 - System booted into Safe mode.
101495 -
101496 - Reports missing following file:
101497 -
101498 - win95/system/crtdll.dll
101499 -
101500 - Why isn't w98 looking for files in the w98 directory?
101501 -
101502 - Copied this file from CPU11 to Kath's system, while still in Safe
101503 - mode.
101504 -
101505 - Booted computer.
101506 -
101507 - Got fatal exception 0E: 0020:C00143F7

101509 - This is just of many of these errors.
101510 -
101511 - Pressed Enter and the system booted successfully.
101512 -
101513 - Did not get the missing file error.
101514 -
101515 - We really are beginning to have to conclude that this is a hardward
101516 - problem.
101517 -
101518 - We are getting consistent errors of RAM and g and h drives will not
101519 - format.
