070803 - Could not pick up the new computer. Purchased 32 MB of SDRAM, but
070804 - could not get the terminator connectors for the SCSI Exabyte tape
070805 - drive. Found the pins from the tape drive for CPU #8, and installed

0727 - 1902 Found Terminator Pins
0728 -
072801 - In San Francisco, I found the pins removed from the tape drive
072802 - in CPU #8.
072803 -
072804 - They were in the top right hand drawer of my desk. The three
072805 - terminator connector pins were in the removable tray beneath a tape
072806 - for my dictating machine.
072807 -
072808 -
072809 - ..
072810 - Installed Terminator Connector Pins
072811 -
072812 - Follow up ref SDS 3 2132, ref SDS 1 1835.
072813 -
072814 - The Exabyte manual says on page 21:
072815 -
072816 - To replace a terminator, make sure that pin 1 of the terminator
072817 - is aligned with pin 1 of the socket and that no pins are bent.
072818 - The writing on the terminator should face upward. Pin 1 of the
072819 - terminator is marked with a colored line or dot and should line
072820 - up with the right side of the socket.
072821 -
072822 - The difficulty with this instruction is that it is a near miracle to
072823 - align the pins with anything. These pins are very small. The sockets
072824 - on the tape drive are arranged with minimal to no space for
072825 - positioning the pins to align them with the sockets.
072826 -
072827 - I noticed that some of the pins on one of the terminator connectors
072828 - were bent. I straightened them.
072829 -
072830 - I did not notice any writing or markings of any kind on any side of
072831 - the terminator connectors. What does "upward" mean with respect to
072832 - the writing?
072833 -
072834 - Which is the right side of the socket?
072835 -
072836 - I could not align the terminator connectors with the sockets. I tried
072837 - using needle nose plyers, which worked to remove them originally. This
072838 - failed because I could not see the position of the pins with the
072839 - sockets because the sockets are recessed too far into the housing of
072840 - the tape drive. I tried using a flashlight but this did not help. You
072841 - can see the sockets until the terminator connector pin is moved into
072842 - the recessed socket position, then the terminator connector pin blocks
072843 - sight of the sockets, so it is a mere guess on the position.
072844 -
072845 - I tried to remove the cover plate to gain access to the sockets. The
072846 - screws that fasten the cover plate to the tape drive housing are too
072847 - small for any conventional phillips screw driver to work. After half
072848 - an hour or so, I was able to remove two screws, but there were still
072849 - at least two more that I could not budge.
072850 -
072851 - I tried again to position the terminator pins using my fingers and was
072852 - finally able to get one to align well enough so it could be pushed,
072853 - using a small screw driver, into the 8 sockets.
072854 -
072855 - I then did the terminator on the other side, and got it installed,
072856 - and then the did the center one.
072857 -
072858 - I consider this installation entirely an accident.
072859 -
072860 - I checked to see if any pins were bent or outside a socket and could
072861 - not see any defect, so hopefully these pins are correctly installed.

Terminate SCSI Bus

080402 - Discovered Error in Prior Installation on CPU #3
080403 -
080404 - Millie said the CD ROM has not worked since I installed the Exabyte
080405 - 8505 tape drive. This work was done on 970408. ref SDS 1 1835
080406 - ..
080407 - The error was in using the same procedure of removing the
080408 - terminator connectors on the tape drive for CPU #03, which should not
080409 - have been done because on CPU #03 the tape drive was the physical end
080410 - of the SCSI bus.
080411 -
080412 - This error seems to have ocurred for the following reason.
080413 -
080414 - I used the procedure on CPU #03 that was used to install the tape
080415 - drive on CPU #8 successfully.
080416 -
080417 - However, the physical positioning of the SCSI hardware is
080418 - different on CPU #3 from that on CPU #8. On CPU #8, the CD ROM is
080419 - above the tape drive, whereas on CPU #3 the CD ROM is below the
080420 - tape drive which made the tape drive the physical end of the SCSI
080421 - bus. Therefore, I should not have removed the terminator
080422 - connector pins from the tape drive on CPU #3, since it is the
080423 - physical end of the SCSI bus, unlike CPU #08, where the CD ROM is
080424 - the physical end of the SCSI bus.
