- Installed MS FrontPage 98, Internet Explorer 4.1 and Image Maker. The
- Internet Explorer program included code that provides an optional
- different desktop environment that works similar to Web browsers. I
- tried this and for decided to use the conventional desktop, because

-
- Follow up ref SDS 2 1331.
- ..
- I logged onto Microsoft's Web page and it offered a free
- download of MS Internet Explorer 4.01. It said the download includes a
- copy of...
-
- FrontPage Express
-
- ...with the program.
- ..
- I decided to download this free improvement to Internet
- Explorer. It provides a comparable Microsoft Web browser to Netscape
- 4.0 which was acquired a week or so ago. ref SDS 2 1331
- ..
- Possibly it improves upon the current version of Internet
- Explorer which does not seem to support opening HTML files stored on
- the local hard drive, when called from a link in an HTML file open in
- the browser, per our planning for the Communication Metrics Web site.
- ref SDS 5 5147.
-
- Turns out, the new version 4.01 does not seem to do this, which is
- supported by Netscape. ref SDS 5 5147
-
- [On 980304 called Microsoft, they could not solve problem. ref
- SDS 7 0974]
-
- It also provides a program which FrontPage Express can upgrade (this
- turned out not to work, ref SDS 0 4608).
-
-
- ..
- Download Took 6 Hours, About 60MB
-
- Initially I downloaded a setup file called:
-
- IE4SETUP EXE
-
- ...this was put in
-
- c: sd 10
-
- The instructions were run this IE4SETUP EXE file while still
- logged onto the Internet.
-
- After getting the thing installed, I noticed there is a copy
- of the file in the setup directory:
-
- i: Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup
- ..
- I ran the ie4setup.exe file by clicking on it from the
- Explorer listing, and it then performed a download that indicated
- about 25 MB of stuff was involved. However, the IBM Dialer
- recorded that actually nearly 60 MB of stuff was downloaded. After
- the download was completed which took nearly 6 hours, the setup
- program seems to have converted the downloaded files into Interned
- Explorer files. It is unclear whether the downloaded files remain
- in their original form on the disk.
-
- This is troubling because
-
- i: 00 26 micros~1
-
- ...properties shows only...
-
- 4 MB
- 58 Files
- 7 Folders
- ..
- Actually, it looks like the setup file was put in a
- directory:
-
- i: Internet Explorer 4.0 Setup
-
- ...it seems to have about 25 MB of stuff, indicating that the
- 60MB downloaded may have been recording some kind of checking
- process on the 25 MB of stuff that was actually downloaded.
-
- [See follow up showing I drive has only 68 MB free. ref SDS 6

-
- ..
- Installed MS Internet Explorer, Version Unclear
-
- The Microsoft offer indicated this was downloading version 4.01.
- Installation seemed to indicate it is only version 4.0. Having
- installed it, the Properties folder shows:
-
- Version 4.72.2106.1
-
- ...there is a boot screen that opens that permits exploring these
- new features. It indicates we have version 4.01.
-
- Wanted to install MS Explorer in:
-
- h: 00 31
-
- ...however we already have Explorer v 3.0 in directory:
-
- i: 00 26 micros~1
-
- ...therefore, to avoid initial mishaps in installation, I put the
- new version in this prior directory.

-
- ..
- FrontPage Express Did Not Permit Installation of FrontPage 98
-
- Installation of Internet Explorer 4.01 seems to have also installed
- FrontPage Express, but it did not permit or enable installation of the
- FrontPage 98 upgrade, per below. ref SDS 0 4608
-
- I tried FrontPage Express on editing the Communication Metrics
- report, but it did not seem to do anything helpful.
-
- [Removed this program the next day. ref SDS 6 2400]
-
-
- ..
- Desktop Option to Use Web Browser Interface
-
- This new version of Intenet Explorer, included an option to install an
- alternate W95 desktop.
-
- The option is in
-
- Start
- Settings
- Active Desktop
- View as Web Page
-
- The idea seems to be to provide manuverability for the desktop
- that is comparable to that for a Web browser.
-
-
-
- ..
- Explorer Disk Directory Applies Web Browser Features
-
- The program also installed a different program for searching disk
- directories.
-
- The original program is:
-
- i: 00 26 explorer.exe
-
- We seem to have a new program. The properties show it as:
-
- i: 00 26 explorer.scf
-
- ...however, when we examine the i: 00 26 directory, there is no
- file called
-
- explorer.scf
-
- ...there is a file called simply:
-
- explorer
-
- ...and it seems to have the same icon as the version on the
- desktop that shows
-
- explorer.scf
-
- ...however this file is only 1K.
-
-
- ...the size of the explorer.exe file is 166K and it is dated
- 971118, which is the same date as the explorer file, so it
- appears these are related such that explorer somehow calls
- explorer.exe, and that latter was replaced.
-
- So, I am assuming the old program has been replaced rather than
- supplemented.
