090705 - reunion so they can get notes of the event. He has done interesting
090706 - research on factors in winning wrestling matches.
090707 -
090708 - Sent ref DIT 1 submitting this record so Richard can comment as he
090709 - feels warranted to complete and/or correct understanding of his ideas
090710 - on fitness. Transmitted notes of the wrestling event, ref SDS 9 and

0910 - Discussion
0911 -
091101 - Asked Richard how to spell Don Quixote, which I am using at ref SDS 10
091102 - 0976. He could not remember, but I remembered it is probably in the
091103 - dictionary, and found it there.
091104 -
091105 - I explained having heard from George Fernandez, and that I am sending
091106 - notes to George of our get together. ref SDS 11 9640 Advised I am
091107 - sending Richard notes also, and asked Richard to make distribution. He
091108 - said he does not have the addresses of the other people and he is not
091109 - well enough organization minded to have his office staff make this
091110 - distribution. He will submit the names and phone numbers for me to do
091111 - it.
091112 -
091113 - Richard explained a regimine he has been following in recent months of
091114 - swimming for a hour or so 3 - 4 times a week.
091115 -
091116 - This is for cardiovascular exercise. He also does some special situps
091117 - for his back, and some modified pushups for upper body strength.
091118 - Sounds like he has done a lot of research with professionals on this
091119 - and he urged me to try his approach.
091120 -
091121 - I explained my interest in getting back to running.
091122 -
091123 - Richard recommended against this effort.
091124 -
091125 - I did not mention my association with General Hatch, who at 60 or so
091126 - is still running in the Boston marathon. Of course Hank likely does
091127 - not have the history of my knee problems, and may simply be a genetic
091128 - wonder, along with Dick Hennig, who at 64, can still motor around the
091129 - tennis court without the evident after affects to his knees that I
091130 - have.
091131 -
091132 - Richard experessed concern that I was not listening to him, and asked
091133 - me to repeat some of his discussion about the "woman's" pushup. This
091134 - anxiety reflects frustrations from subtle limitations of communicating
091135 - by dialog. I will send this record to Richard, and if he feels there
091136 - is something important I missed, he can write it down and send it to
091137 - me for inclusion in the record.
091138 -
091139 - I may have not grasped Richard's entire explanation in the full
091140 - measure he intended, but his primary point seems to be about avoiding
091141 - exercise that impacts the joints, particularly in the legs, which
091142 - relates well to my condition. I think I am still going to try running.
091143 - I mentioned the sense of exhilaration that seems to come from bouncing
091144 - along at a fast pace, with sweat pouring off the body, if you can get
091145 - well enough conditioned to make that kind of effort. We'll just have
091146 - to see. We also discussed biking, and the and stair master as fall
091147 - back approaches.
091148 -
091149 - Richard recommends staying away from conventional weights.
091150 -
091151 - He explained some research he did in the mid-80s when he had the
091152 - Cupertino HS wrestling program, of the correlation between winning and
091153 - getting the first take-down. He said others have done studies on this
091154 - so the importance of getting the first takedown is pretty well
091155 - established. Richard's study focused on the correlation between
091156 - winning and making the first attempt at a takedown, regardless of
091157 - whether it was successful, or even resulted in the oponent gaining the
091158 - first takedown, as a result of error or countermove. His sense seems
091159 - to be that aggresiveness alone has an impact. I wondered this evening
091160 - about harnessing aggressiveness with control and planning. Have two
091161 - or three ways to attack and train to be prepared to use them according
091162 - to opportunity.
091163 -
091164 - We considered the prospect of Richard returning to coaching. He
091165 - mentioned having under consideration becoming a sort of general coach
091166 - who supports programs throughout the high school program, to impart
091167 - his ideas, including the results of his research, as we discussed this
091168 - evening.
091169 -
091170 - I mentioned having thought about approaching the folks who managed the
091171 - evening ceremony at the State Finals last Saturday, to mention Ron and
091172 - Vaughn Hitchcock, per ref SDS 10 8599. Richard said he thought about
091173 - it too, so maybe this can be a future initiative.
