7 Habits Highly Effective People
0809 - ..
0810 - Summary/Objective
0811 -
081101 - Jeff is here to submit proposals to PUC, and wants to use our computer
081102 - to develop his figures.
081103 -
081104 - I asked him to review the recent work on defining SDS scope and
081105 - application to management needs and opportunities, per ref SDS 2 and
081106 - 7, and ref OF 1 line 150.
081107 -
081108 -
0812 -
0813 -
0814 - Discussion
0815 -
081501 - Jeff used my computer this evening to prepare spreadsheet analyses of
081502 - proposed terms for electrical power bids to Utility companies. He is
081503 - meeting this week with other power developers and representatives of
081504 - utility companies (PG&E, South Cal Edison, San Diego Power, etc.),
081505 - under the sponsorship of the PUC, to negotiate for concensus language
081506 - acceptable to all bidders rather than simply have the PUC or the
081507 - utilities prepare bid language independently. Jeff will submit the
081508 - spreadsheet analyses tomorrow, as a catalyst to guide discussions
081509 - toward adoption of his proposals.
081510 -
081511 -
081512 - Jeff is not Capturing the Record
081513 -
081514 - I noted that his chances of succeeding will be improved if he captures
081515 - in SDS what is said by him and others in this and all other meetings,
081516 - telephone calls and dicussions, so he better understands the options,
081517 - implications and advantages of the issues involved, as explained at
081518 - ref SDS 4 line 071574. Jeff does not seem to be using SDS in this
081519 - manner. He has, however, read "7 Habits of Highly Successful People,"
081520 - and uses the audio tapes to assist him in learning and applying this
081521 - material. He sees some correlation between his objectives with SDS
081522 - and "7 Habits...". Jeff recalled Covey's analogy of "Sharpening the
081523 - saw..." which recommends keeping a journal of thoughts, observations
081524 - and discussions, a central idea in the Diary, per ref SDS 9 line
081525 - 091523. Jeff has not extended his application of this "habit" to
081526 - capturing and developing in SDS his understandings from business
081527 - meetings, such as those with the PUC and utility companies this week.
081528 -
081529 - My general sense is that he has not yet realized that his "under-
081530 - standing" is greatly enhanced by self dialog in SDS records and
081531 - this process increases mental acuity that discloses many more ways
081532 - he can propose to modify PUC bid language that can help his
081533 - company, as explained in the SDS & POIMS scope statement at ref OF
081534 - 1 line 286.
081535 -
081536 -
081537 - Jeff's Comments on SDS & 7 Habits
081538 -
081539 - Since he has been using SDS for several years and is trying to use
081540 - Covey's ideas set out in the "7 Habits..." I asked him to comment on
081541 - my analysis of this work at ref SDS 9 line 091101, including the
081542 - review of the Cal Tech seminar and the SDS scope statement, ref OF 1.
081543 -
081544 -
081545 - SDS Citations
081546 -
081547 - I demonstrated how SDS citation tools can quickly provide detailed
081548 - linkage of knowledge and ideas, and can access citations instantly.
081549 -
081550 - Jeff seemed to appreaciate this feature, and asked if it is part of
081551 - his SDS program. I explained the citation feature was included in the
081552 - program update submitted to him in August, at ref SDS 2 line 050801
081553 - via ref DIP 1, which included the explanation at ref SDS 1 line
081554 - 041740.
081555 -
081556 - Comment
081557 -
081558 - Citations are explained in Help for SDS records under "Records."
081559 -
081560 -
081561 - Jeff said he uses citations to support his marketing proposals,
081562 - through conventional footnotes created with Wordperfect. I showed how
081563 - SDS improves upon this practice and enables everyone to benefit from
081564 - supporting their work, by reducing mistakes and data entry, per ref
081565 - SDS 4 line 071607, see also ref OF 1 line 81.
081566 -
081567 - Jeff's feels his bidding proposals should use standard footnote pro-
081568 - cedures for citations because he believes that format is easier to
081569 - read than SDS citations embedded in the text. He asked if the SDS
081570 - citation access feature works through Wordperfect. I explained
081571 - Wordperfect does not support access to specified lines, like SDS does.
081572 - We dis- cussed the advantages of listing all documents within SDS
081573 - records in order to capture the reasons for taking certain positions
081574 - and not taking others, what fall back positions are available and the
081575 - evidence that is not set out in the base document.
