0507 - Summary/Objective
0508 -
050801 - Welch contract amendment is approved; for now cannot get a
050802 - printer connected to the Voith claim workstation.
050803 -
050804 - Walt is working on the amendment language I submitted at ref SDS 1
050805 - line 52.
050806 -
050807 -
0509 -
0510 -
0511 - 486 CPU
0512 -
051201 - Walt said that Wayne affirmed today his approval on Monday, ref SDS 2
051202 - line 55, to purchase this computer through an amendment to the Welch
051203 - contract. The pending amendment to the Welch contract remains in
051204 - effect, per ref SDS 1 line 52.
051205 -
051206 - It was recognized that since the acquisition is occurring under a
051207 - contract to complete the Broadwater project, that this procurement
051208 - does not disturb regular computer procurement channels and procedures.
051209 -
051210 -
051211 - 486 v. 386
051212 -
051213 - Walt advised that the DP Manager, George, was concerned that a 486
051214 - machine was not needed for the work we are doing. He requested a memo
051215 - on the advantages of using a 486 cpu rather than a 386.
051216 -
051217 - I explained that a 486 is a much better processor for networking and
051218 - multitasking, as with Windows. Performance drops considerably with
051219 - 386 PCs that are networked, but much less so than with a 486. SDS
051220 - runs much faster on a 486, and since it is a management support tool,
051221 - the faster managers can work, the more productive they can be.
051222 -
051223 -
051224 - Autocad for Broadwater As-Builts
051225 -
051226 - Mike Sims asked this morning about the possibility of running Autocad
051227 - on the 486. I explained it runs much faster on a 486 because the
051228 - program is very cpu intensive.
051229 -
051230 -
051231 - PC's v. Main Frame
051232 -
051233 - It was expressed that the DP department is concerned that a heavy
051234 - investment in the main frame system creates pressure to use it instead
051235 - of PCs even though the latter cost much less.
051236 -
051237 - The biggest problem I see is that people are creating a lot of infor-
051238 - mation on the Dec system, but have no way to meaningfully manage it.
051239 - Walt said that some PC's were approved for secretarial support because
051240 - the main system was getting too slow. Now that fewer people are using
051241 - it, the Main Frame system is faster.
051242 -
051243 - I suspect DNRC DP people are concerned that brining in a 486 would
051244 - generate pressure for more of these machines.
051245 -
051246 -
051247 - 1810 Discussion Welch Contract Amendment
051248 -
051249 - Walt said he had to do some work on developing the amendment to the
051250 - Welch contract, and asked if I had prepared any information on it.
051251 - He asked about the final price for the machine, and I explained it
051252 - will be $3,130.
051253 -
051254 - I printed a memo of ref SDS 1. Upon review of this memo, Walt said it
051255 - has enough information for him to draft the explanation for the 486
051256 - machine requested by DP in the meeting today, and that therefore it
051257 - would not be necessary for me to do so, as he earlier requested.

0606 - Discussion
0607 -
060701 - Walt explained that the DP group feels the cost to connect the new
060702 - workstation to the DNRC laser printer system will be about $250 plus
060703 - $40 per month. They recommended that a dot matrix printer be rented
060704 - instead.
060705 -
060706 - I explained that SDS is coded to use HP printer control language
060707 - and this cannot be addressed by a dot matrix. When I was here
060708 - last, I brought a laser printer for the motel, and later Jeff
060709 - bought one for the jobsite. I could bring in another one, but it
060710 - seems silly given all of the printing capability available at
060711 - DNRC.
060712 -
060713 - Walt initially asked me to prepare a memo explaining the anticipated
060714 - volume of printing that will be performed in connection with the Welch
060715 - assignment. I suggested that since some DP staff are troubled by the
060716 - Welch contract computer needs, it would be advisable not to advance
060717 - this effort for awhile, so its prominence can recede. Therefore, no
060718 - report is needed at this time.
