251606 -
251607 - 1. Got back tonight after being gone another week and tried the
251608 - boot disk.

251618 -
251619 - 2. Seemed to boot up okay on Drive A: and started to load
251620 - Driveworks (screen with Driveworks logo and loading, please
251621 - wait), then got message:
251623 - ..
251624 - 3. CRC error reading Drive A:
251625 -
251626 - Abort, Ignore, Retry, Fail?
251628 - ..
251629 - 4. Retry just generated the same message.
251631 - ..
251632 - 5. Abort leaves you booted to Drive A: then I tried to execute
251633 - drivewks manually--that just got me back to the same message.
251635 - ..
251636 - 6. Not sure if this is a disk problem or a problem due to some
251637 - difference between my system and yours.
251639 - ..
251640 - 7. Any suggestions?

251643 - ..
251644 - Yesterday, when Millie and I got back from visiting down South in
251645 - Nipomo, called Gary about responding to Wayne's letter on 040416, per
251646 - above. ref SDS 0 S49K During the call, Gary made some suggestions.
251648 - ..
251649 - Submitted ref DIT 1 0001 to Gary confirming his suggestions for
251650 - helping Wayne recover from an apparent defective boot disk prepared by
251651 - Gary for using Driveworks to partition a hard disk, which is needed in
251652 - order to create logical drives to install SDS.
251653 -
251654 - 1. Per our telecon this afternoon, ref SDS 0 FP5O, here are the
251655 - ideas gathered from our discussion for responding to Wayne's
251656 - letter dated 040416, ref SDS 0 S49K, reporting problems with
251657 - the boot disk you submitted previously, ref DIT 1 0001, and
251658 - discussed in a letter to Wayne on 040411. ref SDS 5 VY3L
251660 - ..
251661 - 2. I understand from our telecon, that you feel some files on the
251662 - boot disk may have gotten corrupted during transit, and this
251663 - resulted in the error message Wayne reports getting,
251664 - ref SDS 0 EO3Q, when he tried to use the floppy disk you
251665 - submitted. ref DIT 1 K47F
251667 - ..
251668 - 3. You suggest that Wayne try the following remedy...
251670 - ..
251671 - Copy the files you submitted previously on the web for
251672 - Driveworks to the floppy disk....
251673 -
251674 - C>copy \drvwks\*.* a:\
251675 -
251676 - ...where c:\drvwks is the directory that Wayne created to store
251677 - the files downloaded a few weeks ago from the files you put on
251678 - the web. ref DIT 1 A67O
251680 - ..
251681 - 4. I checked the files downloaded from the web which you put out
251682 - there for Wayne, a few weeks ago. ref DIT 1 R69I
251684 - ..
251685 - 5. There is a directory called "floppy" which has 2.12 MB, which
251686 - seems too big to put on a 1.2 MB floppy. Did you use new
251687 - floppy that has more capacity than 1.2 MB, so that 2.12 can be
251688 - copied the floppy disk you sent to Wayne? ref DIT 1 N99N
251690 - ..
251691 - 6. Actually, I notice this directory has the file drvwrk.zip which
251692 - is 969K, and so deducting this number from 2.12 suggests this
251693 - stuff will all fit on a 1.2 MB floppy disk. ref DIT 1 U94J
251695 - ..
251696 - 7. This directory called "floppy" has a file dos4g.exe and
251697 - drivewks.exe, plus a number of .sys files. I think this is the
251698 - stuff you want Wayne to copy back onto the floppy disk.
251699 - ref DIT 1 344O
251701 - ..
251702 - 8. Would it help if he ran chkdsk on the floppy to try and detect
251703 - and correct any defects? ref DIT 1 G45J
251704 -
251705 - C>chkdsk a:
251707 - ..
251708 - 9. I put the files in the floppy dir back on the web in dir 10 and
251709 - subdirectory "drvwrks", so that Wayne can download them again,
251710 - if they somehow got lost. ref DIT 1 N46H
251712 - ..
251713 - 10. Wayne may get this letter tonight and might try this approach
251714 - and let us know if it works. ref DIT 1 W46M
251715 -
251717 - ..
251718 - Received ref DRT 2 0001 dated today from Wayne, saying...
251719 -
251720 - 1. I tried several things last night. I downloaded again the
251721 - driveworks stuff on Rod's FTP site in Dir 10 and copied to a
251722 - floppy disk. Of course that doesn't work without the boot disk
251723 - stuff on the floppy also. ref DRT 2 0001
251725 - ..
251726 - 2. I tried copying the files to overwrite the drivesworks files on
251727 - the boot disk I got from Gary. That didn't work either. Same
251728 - result as before, e.g. "CRC error reading Drive A: Abort,
251729 - Ignore, Retry, Fail?". ref DRT 2 FG6F
251731 - ..
251732 - 3. I tried detect and repair from the XP utilities on the boot
251733 - disk (I don't have a DOS prompt on my computer anywhere, so I
251734 - couldn't use C>chkdsk A:). That got about halfway through and
251735 - hung up (drive A was making read/write noises continuously, but
251736 - no progress on the bar that shows progress for about 10
251737 - minutes). From the repetitious nature of the noise, it sounded
251738 - like it got to something it couldn't figure out and just kept
251739 - retrying to do it unsuccessfully. Bottom line-still no
251740 - progress. ref DRT 2 ZG6K
251741 -
251743 - ..
251744 - Submitted ref DIT 2 0001 to Gary asking for further ideas on using
251745 - Driveworks with a boot disk...
251746 -
251747 - 1. Wayne's letter this morning, ref SDS 0 IG3O, reports results
251748 - from trying the ideas I submitted based on our telecon
251749 - yesterday. ref SDS 0 P19T I may not have explained things
251750 - correctly. Off hand, Wayne's results indicate either a
251751 - defective disk or a problem with the a: drive on his computer.
251752 - Sounds like he ran a procedure equivalent to chkdsk and scan
251753 - disk, and it detected unrepairable defects. ref DIT 2 0001
251755 - ..
251756 - 2. Wayne's report seems to indicate the 2nd step he tried was
251757 - close to what you suggested yesterday, copying the files for
251758 - driveworks to overwrite the files, ref SDS 0 P19T, on the boot
251759 - disk, which you submitted previously. ref DIT 2 5V6I
251761 - ..
251762 - 3. Wayne's report that XP does not provide access to a DOS prompt,
251763 - ref SDS 0 IG53, does not sound correct, but maybe that is the
251764 - case. Since we purchased XP the other day, but have not yet
251765 - installed, I am a little hesitant now to install XP. What has
251766 - been your experience on this? ref DIT 2 UV6N
251768 - ..
251769 - 4. Please submit a copy of any ideas you can submit to Wayne at
251770 - the above addresses toward getting things to work. By copy,
251771 - letting Wayne know that in our telecon this morning from the
251772 - hospital, you talked about investigating XP further to see if
251773 - there is way to partition the disk without using a 3rd party
251774 - program, like Driveworks. If we can do this it will be a big
251775 - help. As I recall W2K Help for partitioning the drive does not
251776 - discuss 3rd party software to create a primary and secondary
251777 - partitions, but that may be explained in another section.
251778 - ref DIT 2 2W7K
251780 - ..
251781 - 5. In any event, please let Wayne know the time table when you
251782 - follow up, i.e., later today, tomorrow, Wednesday, etc.
251783 - ref DIT 2 4W8L

251785 - [On 040222 Wayne partition the disk on his computer and
251786 - installed SDS. ref SDS 6 0001

2521 -
252101 - Called Gary.
252102 -
252103 - He is checking XP now to see if there is a way to create an extended
252104 - partition.
252106 - ..
252107 - While he reviewed XP, I looked at W2K, which is close to XP stuff on
252108 - this issue.
252110 - ..
252111 - We concluded there is nothing expressly that says how to create an
252112 - extended partition in Wayne's situation. We found instructions on
252113 - making an extended partition, but it was restricted to a primary
252114 - partition where the the system files and boot files do not exist.
252115 - Since Wayne's computer has only a C: drive it contains the system and
252116 - boot files, so it would seem that situation is not conducive to using
252117 - XP and W2K system methods for creating an extended partition.
252119 - ..
252120 - Further review suggests that once the extended partition is created,
252121 - then after opening the Disk Management section, explained in the
252122 - record on 040411. ref SDS 5 IW6J
252124 - ..
252125 - As a result, of not finding clear guidance on using XP commands to
252126 - create an extended partition, Gary formatted another floppy disk, and
252127 - copied the Driveworks files onto the floppy disk. He will mail it to
252128 - Wayne tomorrow.
252130 - ..
252131 - We further considered that Wayne might try the following steps...
252132 -
252133 - 1. Copy the files from driveworks onto a floppy disk formatted
252134 - using XP.
252135 -
252136 - 2. Put the boot disk Gary submitted and boot the computer.
252138 - ..
252139 - 3. When the A> drive comes up, remove the floppy disk used to the
252140 - boot the computer, and install the floppy with the files
252141 - copied under step 1.
252143 - ..
252144 - 4. Try executing driveworks.
252146 - ..
252147 - Wayne can send me his telephone number at home via return email; and I
252148 - will call him this evening at home to step through these steps, and
252149 - then the steps for creating the logical drives.
