Subject:   SDS "Other Files" Need Savx

Dear Rod,

That does indeed fix the problem. Thanks.

Maybe we could let the system query to verify everything is filled out, and, if not, return a message before opening the file, and if so, then open the file and execute savx, like with formal correspondence. ..
I think this is the correct approach. When the user has specified the file path, use savx to make that a fact.
..
The user specifies paths implicitly in the case of publishing HTML and explicitly in the case of correspondence and Other File documents.
..
There may be instances where the path is not known, but I haven't come across them yet. Certainly whenever the user attempts to import files into SDS, the path is known.
..
I think that even in a Windows version, I would consider copying files into the SDS structure rather than linking to files to avoid what you correctly characterize as "Then when files are anywhere and everywhere, they will be nowhere to be found -- it is a KM dilemma."

There *may* be a use for arbitrary file links in the same way as arbitrary URLs. In KeyNote I use file links all the time. It is quite convenient right up until I start moving files. This presents exactly the same problem as web pages changing URLs. I have recommended a scheme of relative file names so that it is possible to move an entire KeyNote file and all of the relative files to which it links and preserve the relationship - again as is done with HTML.

== Unfamiliar Instructions ==

I know how discouraging it is to struggle with new and unfamiliar instructions, and yet do everything right only to have a lot of work and time wasted ..
Not a problem. It is a bit annoying at times, but I expect some of it.
..
I am finding it easier to use other programs to setup documents. In this case I used MultiEdit to wrap the paragraphs for the file, and TextPad to copy sections for quoting in the SDS record. Here the only glitch is that any paste which goes beyond the end of the file kills SDS, so it is necessary to insert enough blank lines for the paste to work.
..
Essentially all that this shows is that I am more used to Windows editors than DOS ones by now.

Thanks,

Sincerely,

Garold L. Johnson
