Subject:   OHS/DKR Meeting at SRI April 6, 2000

Dear Adam,

Congratulations on a great presentation at the meeting yesterday; and to Eric, as well, for fleshing out the direction of the project.

When time permits, could you comment please on any big additions or corrections to my initial "draft" understandings from your talk, noting any action items that were mentioned or need to be followed up. This is not any kind of official record for general distribution, just personal notes that help me in working with the team. On March 26, Doug requested information on the meeting for March 24. If that happens again, your help today, helps ensure a better response, if Doug later requests information on the meeting yesterday.

By copy, I am asking Eric to do the same, and to submit the updated requirements he presented yesterday.

Doug mentiond plans to visit with SRI and a prospective major sponsor on Monday. He would like to have something to say that indicates his team is able to deliver unique and powerful capability to augment present work practices. There was indication that Doug feels IBM's WBI product provides an impressive capability. Perhaps this will be cited on Monday as something the team will apply in a new, more powerful way.

Along the same line, please consider sharing with Doug the report by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers where General Hatch cited Communication Metrics for providing an "intelligence" function that augments handling of daily working information to save time and money. On March 27, Doug directed the attention of the project team to his 1972 paper that says better handling of daily working information, e.g., this letter, the meeting yesterday, phone calls, etc., would greatly advance knowledge management, so he may be open to the prospect of technology that supports intelligence, also, explained in POIMS.

From your discussions with Jack Park, and in handling this letter, you can see that better handling capability of daily work information is available now, as reported by General Hatch. My feeling is that it can be improved with the help of experts like you, Eric, Jack and others on Doug's outstanding team. This might offer a means for Doug to show in the meeting on Monday that his team can deliver something that is very useful, which nobody else can provide, including IBM.

Hope I am not out of line in mentioning this idea. I know Doug respects your views and would want your input on what might be presented to advance his important cause in the meeting on Monday.

Look forward to your comments on the meeting yesterday.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY
