Subject:   Millie's Progress Implementing 2nd Opinion
Consultation on October 19, 2004 Treating IBC
Second Opinion Received on December 9, 2004

Dear Doctor Guardino,

We have been planning to report Millie's progress, but relapse and treatment have delayed response. A few weeks ago we were saddened to learn that our very close friend has breast disease. Millie and Peggy met in the 1970s, when both were promoted to account executives for major textile manufacturers, and so became pioneers charting a path for opportunities, which many women have since followed. With this long and special bond, it was heartening to hear that you have the lead in managing Peggy's care. When she and Bob visited recently, it was a great pleasure to assure Peggy on your commitment to excellence.
..
Millie has good news. On October 27th, the doctor advised that, following mastectomy surgery, testing shows Millie is disease-free. This seems quite a miracle, and Millie appreciates that disease may recur. For the time being, we are greatful she is off treatment and recovering well. In sum, Millie's Kaiser team synthesized your recommendations for surgery, with ideas from Doctor Benz at UCSF on systemic treatment. Scope of surgery was guided by recent opinions from Doctors Grissom and Bailey. Treating stage IV and secondary IBC with surgery, when there is no evidence of disease, suggests Millie may provide yet another example for helping others. Many lessons learned emerge from Mil's patient history.
..
Again, it was a great pleasure working with Stanford Medical Center, and thanks very much for outstanding work product in your second opinion. Peggy is fortunate to be in good hands.

No response required.

Sincerely,

Rod Welch
