Subject:   Satir change model Applies to SDS?

Dear Rod,

I will have to dig further into the Satir model to answer how it aligns [with SDS, POIMS, NWO, etc., as asked in your letter today.]
..
As to the Scenario, the interchange is interesting, though wordy.

The formatting needs work in that the speaker appears closer to the preceding answer than to his / her statements. There is one line before the speaker intro and 2 after - it should be the other way.

In terms of wording, the interchange is presented as a recollection, but the wording is hypothetical when it should be past tense since it is a memory.
..
The points are pretty good.

I will take a crack at an alternate presentation when I get time.

Thanks,

Garold (Gary) L. Johnson

Sincerely,

Gary,

Does the Satir model discussed in your letter today address any issues on improvement and overcoming resistance to improvement explained in POIMS and NWO? Are there places to strengthen POIMS, NWO and the Typical Day Scenario by showing how SDS approaches and supports ideas in the Satir model?
..
For example today I tried to strengthen the explanation in the Typical Day Scenario for enabling improvement by dealing with attitudes that resist change....

..
...by developing a dialog that explains a simple mechanism for implementing SDS to perform Communication Metrics, simply by asking at the end of a meeting "How soon can I get the the SDS record showing everything is lined up.
..
This focuses on a critical part of answering "What's a metric for communication?" My sense is that accuracy is a reasonable metric, and this is accomplished through alignment that creates an audit trail showing traceability to original sources, called out in management standards because accounting and accountability relate closely to accuracy. Alignment for accuracy has a long tradition of practice in the law and in religion where a mechanism of using citations evolved to verify accuracy, as explained in NWO. Another place where close attention to alignment occurs is the chain of custody for evidence in criminal proceedings. Gaps in the chain of custody raise questions about accuracy of the evidence, which the culture greatly values in order to ensure justice is done in deciding questions of quilt and innocence.
..
See what you think, how does this fit with that Satir message, which you have brought forward in your letter today, and with other sources like Andy Grove, Peter Drucker and Stephen Covey???

Sincerely,

Rod Welch

Rod,

[Responding to your letter today asking how the Satir change model relates to the agenda for SDS, POIMS and NWO, etc.] The Satir Model is being used by a number of groups as an approach to understanding and thereby helping to bring about organizational change. I am skeptical as to how well these groups are actually succeeding, but they are making money from selling seminars whether they are successfully changing organizations.
..
It may help us help those within an organization who see the potential of SDS bring about some of the changes within their groups that might further the adoption of SDS.

I don't know yet whether the model leads to any ideas for promoting SDS or to any features that might allow SDS to be adopted more readily. This is largely because I remain highly skeptical of *any* model that claims it is possible to bring about controlled, specified change in an organization.
..
Still, it appears to be a better model than most for describing *what* happens when change occurs, whether it allows change to be initiated and controlled.

Note that describing and controlling are not directly related - I can describe and measure how it is that I am getting older, but I can't *do* anything about it.
..
Thanks,

Sincerely,

Rod,

The Virginia Satir hange Model (summary at http://www.stevenmsmith.com/articles/satir_change_model.htm ) is well though of in many circles. Gerald M. Weinberg uses it in his writings, consulting, and seminars.
