Subject:   Fire

Hello everyone

Yesterday was my first day back to work in about three weeks. I spent it mostly deleting email, but not your email. Thanks for the concern, but we're fine. We were far enough away from the fire that we were never at much risk of being burned. The smoke was pretty bad for a couple of days, but we were never evacuated. In fact, considering that all of Los Alamos and White Rock and parts of Espanola were evacuated, we were probably among the least affected people in the area.

We are friends with 4 families who we thought must have lost their houses, only to find out that they had suffered very little damage. In fact, a family that stayed with us for a short time owned one of three houses on their street that didn't burn. All the houses in front of and behind them did burn. A trailer in their front yard burned. A window on their house was deformed by the heat, but their house didn't burn. Kind of makes me feel like a good-luck charm. As they said on Saturday Night Live: GET TO KNOW ME!

Well the luck isn't that strong. We do know others who lost everything, and I can't say it is fun to watch your friends (and their kids) trying to figure out whether their houses are still standing. It is not as pretty here as it used to be. I suspect that people who no longer have neighbors and whose houses are now nestled in among charcoal stumps instead of pine trees are not quite as happy as they might have been.

I'll try to answer specific questions from your emails over the coarse of the day. Stay tuned.

cheers

Sincerely,

Los Alamos National Laboratory

John
