Subject:   Terminator Does Not Fit

Dear Charles,

I called and talked to Mark Higley today about progress on planning last week on October 11, 2001 for receiving a letter from Exabyte confirming the scope of modifications and purchases for improving performance of the tape drive, currently about 100 MB/Min, to meet Exabyte specifications for a range from 200 MB/Min - 300 MB/Min. The purchased items were scheduled for delivery on Monday October 15, 2001, but have not received.

After our conversation on October 11, the next day on Friday October 12, we purchased two terminators that meet the Exabyte specifciation for AMP 750381-1, as backup to the inline terminator purchased from Exabyte. These backup terminators were received today, and measure approximately 1.4" wide. It turns out they do not fit the cable that came with the Exabyte Mammoth LT SE tape drive, which measures about 2.6", as shown in the record today.

Therefore, in addition to notifying about the status of the order placed with you and Carrie on October 11, can you let me know if there is a procedure for installing the AMP 750381-1 terminators? For example, are we supposed to get a converter of some kind? Is there an error in the Exabyte specification? What remedy does Exabyte propose?

On Thursday, October 11, 2001, Carrie, who in the afternoon assisted during our telephone discussion, earlier in the day had instructed a change from "Yes" to "No" for Wide Negotiation in the BIOS for the Adaptec 19160 BIOS, in an effort to improve performance from 127 MB/Min to 200+ MB/Min. As we discussed, performance declined to 100 MB/Min. You suggested changing the DTR from 40 to 10, and you indicated that installing the terminator would help address this disparity. Since we have not received the inline terminator ordered from Exabyte, and since the Exabyte terminator spec does not seem to work, we have been unable to test this theory. However, does the difference between the terminator specified as 1.4" and the actual cable being 2.6" bear on the change made to the BIOS for wide negotiation? Could that have been error?

Finally, after talking to you on Thursday, October 11, I contacted Microsoft at their Internet address, but could not find any downloads for the Adaptec 19160 SCSI adapter, which you recommended be downloaded. Can you provide additional guidance on this matter.

Thanks very much for assistance on this.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY
