Subject:   Problems with Backup on W2K and Intel Computer

Rod,

[Responding to your letter on June 6, 2001.... ]

Yes this is common knowledge to the backup community that you cannot have the computer running Power Management and then have a backup run. The hard drives do not receive the command correctly from anything besides built in utilities from what we have seen in testing. The only solution we have is the NovaNet software which will run as a service and might be able to run the backup. You can download a demo of this software from our web site.

Sincerely,

NovaStor Technical Support Team

Bill,

Thanks very much for information in your letter today.

Can you provide a reference to Novaback literature that supports this advice, and where is the customer notified in Novaback sales information that Novaback does not support power management? Is this an industry standard, and so requires no notice, because all backup programs work the same way, so it is common knowledge?

How does backup differ from defragmenting the hard drive. This about 4 hours on our computer, so it is run over night. In the morning, the system comes up correctly. Why doesn't Novaback work the same way?

Thanks.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY

Rod

Rod,

[Responding to your letter on June 5, 2001.... ]

You need to completely turn off all Power Management settings or the backup will not be able to run. If the hard drive is powered down before the backup is done or during the backup the backup cannot run.

Bill,

Thanks very much for a response in your letter on June 4, 2001.

You requested more information in your letter today, but do not explain what is needed. We provided an explanation of our hardware, and provided a link to the record on April 3, 2001 that explains what we did using your software, and what happened that went wrong.

The same problem occurred recently on June 1, 2001.

If you need more information than is available in these records, in order to assess possible Novaback issues, please let me know.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY

Rod

We would like to assist you with the NovaBack software. However, we currently do not have enough information to provide an adequate solution or suggestion. Please provide additional information regarding the difficulties you are experiencing so that we may better assist you. Be sure to include any errors received from the software. We have not way to control your system so that it shuts down after your backup.

Subject:   Problems with Backup on W2K and Intel Computer

Thanks for your letter today requesting customer feedback.

We are using Novaback version 6.6 PI 11701-SCSI. It is running under Windows 2000 on a 1.4 GHz 400 MHz bus Intel processor and a D850GB main board. We have 512 MB of RAM and 46 GB Hard drive, as shown in the record on February 2, 2001.

Novaback is running an Exabyte Mammoth LT tape drive, also, as specified in the record on February 2, 2001.

We want to start a backup and go home, and after it completes, the monitor and hard drive should shut down to save power. We are in California, where power is an issue.

When we come in the next day, the cmoputer won't run. We have to boot it which wastes time. Verify logs show this operation crashes. See for example the record on April 3, 2001 explaining the extra expense incurred to investigate and attempt corrective action.

Yesterday, the same thing happened again to a backup we started on June 1, 2001 before leaving for a trip.

Does Novaback have a new version of the tape drive program that can accomplish our objective to save time and money?

Thanks.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY

Rod
